Committee Statement 2026

The organisers of Woodley Community Carnival are appalled by the incidents that took place during Saturday's event. We condemn all forms of violence, anti-social behaviour and intimidation and we are particularly disappointed that individuals appeared to attend the event with the intention of causing disruption and creating content for social media.

The safety of our visitors, volunteers, exhibitors and performers is always our highest priority. The Carnival was planned and delivered in accordance with the requirements of the Safety Advisory Group (SAG), with robust measures implemented through our Event Management Plan. Throughout the incident, our security teams operated from the event control point, appropriate procedures were enacted, and Thames Valley Police were informed and engaged as required. These measures ultimately resulted in a temporary lockdown of the event while those responsible were identified and removed from the site.

It is important that the actions of groups of young people, believed to have travelled to attend the Carnival, encouraged and influenced by content shared on social media, do not become a reflection of the young people from our local community. Every year, thousands of residents attend the Carnival, and the overwhelming majority of our young visitors are polite, courteous and respectful. Many even go out of their way to assist volunteers and support the event throughout the day. They remain a credit to our community.

The Carnival Day was a great success with thousands of people enjoying the afternoon fair, evening concert and firework finale, however we do recognise that some visitors were more directly affected by these incidents than others, and we are sincerely sorry that their experience of what should have been a positive community celebration was impacted. We understand the concern this has caused and the effect it may have on confidence in attending future events.

Over recent years, the Carnival Committee has proactively introduced additional security measures, including alcohol restrictions, bag searches and enhanced entry controls. Following this year's events, we will work closely with our partners, security providers, local authorities and the police to undertake a full review. Any further recommendations arising from that review will be carefully considered and implemented where appropriate to ensure the continued safety and enjoyment of everyone attending the Carnival.

Woodley Community Carnival has been at the heart of our town for many years and remains a celebration of community spirit, local organisations, volunteers and families. We would like to thank everyone who attended, supported the event and assisted our teams during a challenging situation. We remain committed to providing a safe, welcoming and enjoyable event for all members of our community in the future.
